LEGAL ENGLISH 5

Legal English for real legal work.

Learn legal English with five-minute lessons. Understand each term in context, discover how it combines with other words, and recognize the differences between the common law and civil law.

Designed for Spanish-speaking lawyers, law students and other legal professionals.

Two legal professionals review documents together in a modern corporate office.

How it works

  1. Choose an area.

Foundations, Contracts, Corporate or Employment. We recommend starting with Foundations, or taking its assessment if you already know the basics.

  2. Study one term a day.

Every lesson follows the same order: the term and its pronunciation, the definition, the equivalent in Colombian law, an example, how the term combines with other words and, when needed, an alert, a contrast with another term or a comparative law note.

  3. Check what you learned.

Every lesson ends with a quiz that explains each answer.

  4. Practice with cases.

After each group of lessons you answer questions about clauses and cases. At the end of each area there is a general review practice.

  5. Review what you found hard.

The terms you miss go to your review list. If a lesson uses a term you have not studied yet, the app suggests studying it first.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Legal English 5 for?

For Spanish-speaking lawyers, law students and other legal professionals who use English in their studies or their work. An intermediate level of English (B1 or higher) is recommended.

Is it a general English course?

No. Legal English 5 teaches the legal vocabulary found in contracts, corporate documents and employment relationships: what it means, how it is used and how it differs from its equivalent in Colombian law.

Which areas does it include?

Foundations, Contracts, Corporate and Employment: 300 terms in total. Foundations brings together the basic terms the other three areas use, such as agreement, binding, breach or shall.

Where do I start?

We recommend starting with Foundations. If you already know those terms, you can take a short assessment before entering another area. The terms you miss go to your review list. Neither the assessment nor Foundations is mandatory.

Can I look up a single term?

Yes, but to learn we recommend studying each area in order, because each term builds on the previous ones. For example, before contract you learn agreement, party and enforceable. If you open a single term, the lesson tells you which terms to study first.

How much time do I need each day?

About five minutes for a lesson. The practice for each group of lessons takes a little longer, and you can leave it halfway and pick up where you left off.

Is it useful if I do not practice in Colombia?

Yes. Legal English, the alerts about false friends and the notes on the common law are useful to any Spanish speaker. For comparison, each lesson uses Colombian law as its reference, which, like the law of almost every Spanish-speaking country, belongs to the civil law tradition. That is why many of the differences with the common law also apply in your country, for example that a contract can be gratuitous. Note, however, that the rules cited are Colombian, and some Spanish terms may have a different name where you practice.

Do I learn US or UK English?

Both. The main term is given in its US form. When the United Kingdom uses a different term or spells the same word differently, the lesson shows it; for example, bylaws versus articles of association. To read the notes (in Spanish), it helps to tell three expressions apart:

  • Common law: the legal tradition of the US, England and other countries, in which judicial decisions are a main source of law (precedent). It is contrasted with the civil law tradition, based on codes, like Colombian law. The lesson says “common law” when the rule is shared by the US and England.
  • English law (derecho inglés): the law of England and Wales; some of the employment statutes we cite also apply in Scotland. The United Kingdom does not have a single legal system: Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own. When a statute applies throughout the United Kingdom, the lesson says “en el Reino Unido”.
  • US law (derecho de EE. UU.): it combines federal law with the law of each state, which may differ.
Who prepares the content?

María del Pilar Cruz, a Colombian lawyer, is responsible for editorial quality. Every lesson is reviewed before publication, and its legal statements are checked against official sources or legal dictionaries that the lesson cites.

What happens if I fail a quiz or a practice?

Nothing serious: the quiz explains why each option is right or wrong, and the terms you miss in the practice go to your review list. Practice never blocks your progress.
